“I came to College in 1974 when I was 16. I lived in Keighley and at first I found travelling in on the bus quite daunting but being a chef was all I ever wanted to do. I did my City and Guilds and all the additional courses like bakery. We were taught in the Old Building and in what was once the Alexandra Hotel.
I particularly remember Mr Greenwood and the bakery teachers. I learnt an awful lot and got all the basics and moved on to a company called Catering by County. I bought the company in 1992 with my business partner, Ian Ghiloni, and we set up County Caterers. Although I qualified as a chef I quickly realised that I didn’t want to stay in a restaurant kitchen.
I have always loved catering. It gave me the variety I was looking for and I have always enjoyed the logistical challenge of event planning and managing the business. Nothing else would have allowed me to work for the type and scope of people I have been fortunate enough to cater for, including Her Majesty the Queen.
I believe success comes from getting attached to what you are doing and taking it personally.”
